Arkengarthdale and black grouse

Today I received a phone call about an ecology survey to be carried out on a farm in Arkengarthdale, a beautiful and remote valley in the Yorkshire Dales. That got me thinking about black grouse amongst other birds of the valley and so I thought I would post a photo I took in Scotland a couple of years ago that I uncovered while cleaning out the hard drives of unedited images from previous shoots. It always amazes me how sometimes, on the first edit, it’s possible to overlook a good image :¬)

Curlew on the moors

I love the bubbling sound of curlews on the Yorkshire moorland on a summer’s day. Now at the end of the breeding season, these birds are gathering and making their way to the coast and lower pastures

Summer Plumaged Turnstone

Just got round to processing a few shots from earlier this spring. I photographed this summer plumaged turnstone on a quiet beach on the Isle of Bute in early June. There were around 9 individuals in various stages of summer plumage, presumably all heading north but likely non-breeders given the date.

Landscape Photography: The Netherlands

I’ve just returned from a family holiday in Luxembourg and Holland and, although I didn’t do a great deal of photography, I did spend an evening with the Fuji X Pro 1 on the beach at sunset. These images are taken near Domburg using the Fujinon 14mm f/2.8 lens and various Lee filters and the long exposures are done with a Tiffen 10stop ND.

Small Copper on Sea Holly

I’ve been playing with my new Fuji X Pro 1 which I bought to use in my commercial work but it is just lovely to carry around as a day-to-day camera. Here I used a x2 close-up filter on the 35 f1/4 to capture this small copper on sea holly among sand dunes on the Dutch coastline. I’ve then given it a bit of a painterly feel in post ;¬)
