Yorkshire Dales landscape photography

kingcups in Raydale. Yorkshire Dales landscape photography
Just returned from a short break with the family where I managed to get some Yorkshire Dales landscape photography under the belt. The weather was fairly kind with mixed spells of sunshine and high clouds which made for dramatic skies when converted to black and white. There were lots of curlew and lapwing breeding in the fields and on the high tops we had a few golden plovers calling but, apart from photographing some toads and a few flowers, I only really managed landscapes while out on walks. These images are all taken with the Fuji X Pro-1 which is a great camera to walk around with.

great crested grebes in York

I couldn’t resist going back to York again today to have another session with a very obliging pair of great crested grebes that seemed to revel in being photographed and showing off their two chicks! The weather turned out to be superb for the shoot with soft bright sunshine giving a lovely green reflection of the willows in the water, although it did prove a little hot for the grebes’ face and breast feathers so I was forever juggling the exposure as the birds turned or brief cloud cover came over. In just under two hours I had images of the birds feeding way over-sized fish to the young who were unable to swallow them, nest change over, adults preening and some super portraits as they drifted into bright pools of light amongst the shadows of the nearby buildings. Here are just a few quick edits as I have well over 1000 images to sift through!

great crested grebes in York

Great crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus)

I nipped over to meet with friend and fellow photographer Ian to photograph great crested grebes in York this morning. The tip off of these birds came earlier in the week but today was the first chance we’d both had and typically, the weather was not great compared with the past couple of days. However, we had the sun for around 45 minutes before the cloud cover arrived and with it a stiff cool breeze that rippled the waters and spoiled the reflections. I think I will go again tomorrow as there looks to be a fair chance of a good sunrise but then I won’t be able to make it again till next weekend. I’m pleased with what I got in the short time we had and I’ve posted a few here but I really am hoping for a flat calm sunrise and a perfect reflection. There is a weeping willow in front and behind the nest which, given some still water and sunshine, will make the nest appear to be set in a pea green soup. Today we had grey heron posing very well just in front of us to for an added bonus.

{Yorkshire wildlife photographer} Willow Warbler

Spring is definitely on its way now with new migrants arriving by the day. The chiffchaff has been around for a few weeks now, but there’s also now the song of willow warbler ringing from the woods. These little beauties are beginning to arrive on mass and now is the time to photograph them while there is still relatively little leaf cover and they are intent on belting out there unmistakable song in search of a mate. Willow warbler

Showcase: Great bustards

Another in the occasional showcase series and again another iconic species from Spain. Last time I showed some images of hoopoe, also done in Spain, in fact they were actually taken from the hide while waiting for the great bustards to put in an appearance! When the great bustards did finally come, it was one of those magical experiences when you just feel privileged to witness the natural world.
